Long Beach Coin Show

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The big thing this weekend is the Long Beach Coin Show. What began Thursday, runs until this Sunday June 3, 2007. Imagine having a coin in your hand worth 2.5 million? That would be the 1854 Kellogg & Co. twenty dollar gold coin. That’s just one of the many coins on display at the Long Beach Convention Center in the heart of the downtown district.

Most of the expected 5000 attendees arrive from throughout the world. They will be checking out any of the 400 booths displaying coins, paper money, stamps, antique jewelry and historical documents.
A children’s treasure hunt will be held on Saturday, which draws more than 200 children every year. This year, one gold coin worth about $100 will be given away each day during a drawing.
The prices on the collectibles ranged from $3 to a couple thousand dollars.

Long Beach Soldier Laid to Rest

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Alas, another one of our fallen soldiers has arrived home in Long Beach. As of today, 3421 troops have been taken from us since March 2003. 71 soldiers have been killed this month alone. For the soldier from Long Beach, more than 40 family members and close friends gathered in a reception room at Long Beach Airport, waiting for the body of 23-year-old Staff Sgt. Joshua Whitaker, a former Millikan High School student who became a decorated Green Beret.
Whitaker, of Long Beach, died from enemy small-arms fire during a firefight on May 15 near Qalat, Afghanistan.

Whitaker is the second Long Beach soldier to die overseas this month. Spc. Astor Sunsin-Pineda, a Wilson High School graduate, was killed on May 2 when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Whitaker was a Special Forces engineer sergeant assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group from Fort Bragg, N.C.
When are the people of this city and the country going to demand an end to this nonsense?
This is precisely why we need Ron Paul as our president. He would make sure that we butt out of foreign affairs that we have no business meddling in.

More Immigration Problems for Long Beach

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Monday, May 21, we can only assume our pathetic, fascist, elected U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators will create more problems for Long Beach by passing their BENEDICT ARNOLD version of “immigration reform.” Yeah, as if we don’t already have enough problems dealing with illegal immigrants and their anchor babies!

Millions of American citizens and LEGAL immigrants have become determined to OUST ANY POLITICIAN who casts a vote for AMNESTY.

They have been warned: Vote for AMNESTY and you will be RECALLED…Yep, OUT OF A JOB. It will be a NATIONWIDE PUSH FOR REMOVAL.

There are MILLIONS of us who will mobilize to STOP THESE TRAITORS and STRIP THEM of their positions as “servants of the people.”

We will no longer stand for the sell-out of our nation’s sovereignty, free healthcare, education and social services for ILLEGALS AND THEIR KIN, provided by the U.S. taxpayer.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! WE’RE MAD AS HELL AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

All in all, Bob says it best…

Ron Paul For President

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I think all of you realize that Dr. Ron Paul won the Republican debate on Tuesday this week. That was clear. What amazes me is the sheer hubris of the Fox nothing news crew trying to belittle Mr. Paul and also their plans for keeping him out of any future debates. Those people are criminals and are threatening our 1st amendment to free speech. We need this man in the White House.

The Best Park in Long Beach!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

In this city of almost a half million people and 65.9 square miles, there are 92 parks. Hard to believe, but it’s true.

In 2002, 2003 and 2004, The National Parks and Recreation Society awarded their Gold Medal to the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine for “outstanding management practices and programs.” The overall park area they manage is an astounding 3100 acres, including the 815 acre El Dorado Regional Park. El Dorado offers fishing lakes, an archery range, youth campground, bike trails, and picnic areas.

Yes, this brings us to the best park in Long Beach. The sparkling jewel of El Dorado Park is the 102+ acre Nature Center. In the hustle and bustle of a busy metropolis, the Nature Center is a quiet, relaxing oasis.

On an incredibly calming walk, you will see all kinds of wildlife, including turtles, ground squirrels, butterflies, beetles, and perhaps even some snakes, skunks, coyotes, foxes and hawks. Don’t forget to linger at the viewing areas along the lakes, where you most surely see the nesting herons and egrets.

Enjoy your well-canopied stroll through the pines, across wooden bridges and be sure to visit the museum for an extra treat on your way back to civilization.

Nature Center Hours
Trails: Tue-Sun, 8am-5pm
Museum: Tue-Fri, 10am-4pm
Sat/Sun, 8:30am-4pm

• Vehicle entry fees are $4, M-F;
$6, Sa/Su and $7 Holidays
• Buses are $26
Other buses are $30
• Daily park hours are 7am-dusk

Illegal is Still Illegal

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Regarding the illegal alien issue: The vast majority of illegals do not speak English, have no Social Security cards, but somehow manage to be on MediCal and drive late model cars. Most immigrants do work, but because the income is not reported, they are also able to collect welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, MediCal and disability. When these handouts are added to their unreported income, that makes for a pretty nice lifestyle, courtesy of the taxpaying citizens of this state and country, all without paying into the very system they abuse and take advantage of.

There need to be severe penalties to all employers that do not report salaries and withhold the appropriate withholdings, including all of you out there with your under-the-table housekeepers, nannies, gardeners, day laborers, etc. A streamlined tax withholding system that the average citizen/employer that wishes to employ household help etc. can easily do on-line also could be established. Steps to become a legal resident should be part of the package, but must include learning the English language and civics classes to help people assimilate into our society, similar to what the voters in Georgia just approved. People in the country illegally should absolutely not be eligible for any type of public assistance. Emergency rooms should not accept patients that have no way of paying for their care unless it is a true life threatening emergency. Going to the emergency room for a sore throat or ear infection at 10 p.m. is a disgusting waste of resources.

Catalina Island Fire

Monday, May 14th, 2007

For those of you not living under a rock, you may have learned that Catalina Island, some 26 miles off the shore of Long Beach, caught fire May 10th 2007.
What was not reported, (at least very minutely) was the fact that a contractor working on the island touched off the blaze. I guess the news folks would like to avoid any entanglements with this contractor and not risk letting the name out and destroying his reputation. This blogger feels the news media should report the full story to the public. Whatever happened to journalism?

Aquarium of the Pacific

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Today’s entry is a small preview of the Aquarium of the Pacific. This place is awesome. I do not say this because I live here. It truly is a very unique place to visit. There are more than 12,000 inhabitants and it would take literally all day to see the tour. Enjoy.
