The Pole
Looking for an unusual attraction in LB?
Check out The Pole.
On the corner of 4th Street and Lime Avenue, just east of Atlantic, you will see a giant flagpole. Located on the sidewalk, this was Thomas “Ski” Demski’s front yard. Ski passed away in 2002, but his patriotic legacy lives on.
Ski is the holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for having the largest flag in the world, most likely you have seen it unfurled at sporting events or other events on t.v. Price tag? A mere $45,000, paid for entirely by Ski.
Ski was a colorful character, literally and figuratively. With a zealous love of the USA, he spent thousands of dollars having his upper body tattooed in flags, eagles and other patriotic symbols.
His remains are interred in The Pole, along with his closest friend, Clem Maloney who died before him. There you will see commemorative plaques and a bust of him with his beloved parrot, Pepe.
And, of course, you will see a giant flag, which flies day and night as specified in his will. His home was passed along to close friends who continue this tradition.
