Wild Green Parrots of Long Beach

by

One of the first and most arresting things I noticed right away about Long Beach, were the extremely boisterous flocks of brilliant-green wild parrots. A quite bizarre experience, to say the least…
So, you’re sitting at a stop light in Belmont Shore, a wealthy neighborhood and shopping district along the beach, and all of a sudden you hear an overwhelmingly LOUD screeching of birds. You wonder what kind of birds could possibly make such a racket…”What is THAT?!”
And then they swoop across the intersection right in front of you.
“Those are the brightest green birds I’ve ever seen!” you think to yourself (or out loud, if you aren’t traveling alone).
You start asking around. “Where did those green parrots with the long tails come from? Why are they in Long Beach? How long have they been here?”
Fully expecting a scientific answer along the lines of: “Well, they migrate and they stop off here along the way,” you are amazed to learn otherwise…
Rumor has it, there was a fire in a local pet shop, years ago and some of the parrots escaped.
Yes, they disappear during the winter and nobody can say EXACTLY where they go, but in the spring they return. They stay around the beach communities in Long Beach until the southern California “winter” arrives. If you come to Long Beach in the spring or summer, you won’t be able to avoid them. They seem to live in family groups around Ocean Boulevard, returning every spring to grace us with their loud screeching and beautiful bright green and yellow plumage. Another rumor has it, that this bunch flew over from Louisiana. No one knows for sure. So, when you visit Long Beach, enjoy the wildlife!

I remember them well. I grew up in LB and at one point lived on the penninsula (east end of Ocean Blvd). Every time I left the penninsula, I would “hear” the parrots, but rarely saw them. A few times something would scare them out of the trees for a moment, and these beautiful green birds would fly in a circle, and return to their respective trees! Neat to hear about them, I live now live in Oregon, and am lovin it, and blogging it!

I HATE these Parrots because the population has gotten out of control. They do tend to roost in the palms by Vons Market at Ocean and 2nd around dinner time. However, this year at 6am they are coming and landing on my roof and each day bringing more friends. They are fearless, divebombing me in my own driveway and back yard. It is not safe for my 6lb dog for the potential of injury or to be a meal. Another issue to consider is their droppings…full of histoblasmosis, coccidiosis, giardia, etc. Very dangerous to all pets and people. Expensive and arduous treatment to rid. If the droppings and these germs get into the dirt they will live in the ground and keep reinfecting. Too bad 22 rifles and bird hunting are illegal within the Long Beach City borders ! Oh..and I work from home for my company… so the noise is horrid and unprofessional that I cannot call clients when they are around. I say get a big net up between the palms by Vons between a vew cherry picker trucks and snare the green demons.

HATE? A little strong don’t you think? Let’s put this in perspective. Noisy, granted. What a thrilling sound to hear in the middle of our sprawling metropolis. Unprofessional? They’re birds, not bankers, or corporate ceo’s. I personally have taken many calls from vendors and clients that work at home, and find the domestic noises in the background a refreshing respite from the tedium of my day. Parrots, or in this case- parakeets, are not carnivorous, and therefore are not interested in making a meal of any yapping, nipping pampered pooches. It’s quite amusing that a flock of inquisitive parrots has one person so buffaloed as to think that they are the target of attack. Also, consider this fact; our beloved pet’s feces contains as much if not more pathogens and parasites in it as a wild bird. And we all know that even the smallest dog is capable of producing alot more s-stuff than any bird wild, or domesticated. To want to do harm to these rare exotic beauties is a horrendous thought.

I saw these parrots this morning when I was heading back from the beach.I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I looked them up on google and found this info. Truly amazing. Hopefully next time I see them I can get some pictures!

Yes H A T E! They are runining my health. They are trying to nest on the Apartment outside my bedroom window, and at 5:40a.m. they squawk and (even with earplugs in) - Wake me up! I’m 62 and need a decent sleep and the parrots are fine from a distance, but not 30 feet from my window . Eventually someone will get rid of them. Yes, I hate them. (other birds are noisy too, but not like them!)

I second the comment that I HATE the parrots.
To the person “Cross” who does not feel they are a problem, he obviously has not been awoken by the horrendous loud sound even one parrot can make. It’s a large problem. Someone please come up with a solution. I’m losing sleep!
